hazel’s Adoption Story
Hazel with her family at a German Christmas Market
💙ADOPTED❤️ April 18, 2022 – This is a very belated adoption story about 7-year-old Hazel, but better late than never!
We rescued Hazel on Feb 8, 2022, from an auction where puppy mill breeders, pet shops, and dog meat markets buy dogs.
In Rescuer Kim’s words:
“I want to tell about the system of puppy supply chain in Korea upfront.
Puppy mill owners sell their puppies at the dog auction located city outskirts. Pet shop owners buy puppies from there.
BUT puppies not sold at the pet shop. Where they go? To a “special” auction.
Dogs at that auction are “retired puppy mill dogs.” Puppy mill owners think they won’t produce “good” puppies or want to change breed. They send them there.
Retired dogs are sold by weight or in bundles. “All 10 dogs together, who wants them?” “30kg of dogs for 10 KRW.” They are sold like raw materials, like recyclable aluminum. Some go back to the puppy mills. Some go to dog meat restaurants.
In early Feb 2022, a kind person saved 3 pugs at the auction. They brought them to the vet that I used to visit. Hazel was one of these. All 3 were from a puppy mill.
The lucky, surprising thing is they were healthy.
If they were not healthy, they could be buried alive (I saw it on a Korean TV program) or sent to a dog meat restaurant.
Just one call and a car takes them to their horrific end.”
Hazel was rescued with Charlie (adopted). The 3rd pug, a black boy we named Catnip, sadly did not make it.
Hazel was a foster fail and she is now living with her family in Germany (German word for pug = Mops), enjoying German Christmas Markets (Weihnachtsmarkte).
Her mom, Lunling (who fostered many pugs for us when she lived in Korea), says: “
“Hazel is very popular when I take her to events! Anyone loves her! She is doing good and is a happy girl as always. She is priceless and so funny girl!”
